The Weekly Bev - 20th Edition
Monday, July 22nd, 2024
Good afternoon, Weekly Bev! Happy Monday. To start your week off right, we’ve included a little update to the referral program at the bottom of the email 🙂 Let’s jump into it!
😍 Content I’m Loving
I want to talk The Office: Superfan episodes. Since it started streaming on Peacock a couple years ago, the platform has periodically released these “Superfan” episodes that feature additional footage like extended scenes, deleted takes, and never-before-seen clips. It’s like having a directors cut of every episode. I am onto season 3 of the Superfan Episodes and find it really fascinating from a filmmakers perspective.
My biggest takeaway thus far has been the importance of the editors’ decisions on what shots and takes to cut from the final form of the episode. Sometimes I can tell there are contextual lines that don’t make it in just because the performance isn’t on par for that actor. Or even the opposite, certain lines make it into the final cut because the performance is so real and organic. I feel like I get to watch an unfinished timeline, and then compare it to the final episode. Honestly, it also shows how great editing can actually make the show funnier. The comedic timing and pacing within cuts of a scene and the rest of the episode is extremely important. Kudos to the editors, they really bring the show to life.
Would love to be at this table
I think there are a lot of great takeaways from these episodes for creators. For me personally, it has really hit home how I should be more critical of what I include in my vlog. The Office editing team was ruthless about only including content that advanced the story. Every second impacts the pacing and overall narrative. The common editing advice “Murder your darlings” comes to mind—cutting unnecessary content, no matter how great it is or how long you’ve invested in creating it, is essential. While on the topic, I feel the need to break out a quote from the GOAT himself…
“People think focus means saying yes to the thing you’ve got to focus on. But that’s not what it means at all. It means saying no to the hundred other good ideas that there are. You have to pick carefully. I’m actually as proud of the things we haven’t done as the things I have done. Innovation is saying no to 1,000 things.”
Focus on what’s absolutely necessary for the story. Amen!
I’d love to hear your guys’ thoughts on the Superfan episodes. Are there any extended cuts you prefer to the television version? Or scenes you think should’ve made the cut? Also, would anyone be interested in a Director's Cut of Day 1000? Let me know! :)
