The Weekly Bev - 23rd Edition
Monday, August 19th, 2024
Good morning, Weekly Bev crew! I’ve missed you! It’s been two weeks since the last newsletter. If you’ve seen the vlog, I’m sure you can guess why…
I’m officially two weeks post tonsillectomy and septoplasty, and I’m finally starting to feel normal again. The recovery process has been pretty brutal. Two weeks of soft foods, pain killers, nausea, generally just unable to function. Luckily, Mallory has been by my side taking care of me every single day. She has been handling everything from my pain medicine schedule to cooking all of our meals, and I could not be more thankful for her. She’s even been taking over some of my voiceover responsibilities, which you guys have loved, but at what point should I be concerned about my role in the vlog? 🥹 In all seriousness, she’s the greatest and this edition is officially dedicated to Mallory!
My appetite is finally starting to return. I cannot wait for crunchy / acidic foods - chips and guac, tomatoes, real breakfast burritos, basically everything. I also cannot wait to get back to my routine, working more, seeing friends, playing pickleball, etc. There are so many exciting things I’m looking forward to the rest of the year. Let’s get after it!
📈 Work Update
In a recent edition, I talked about how earlier in the summer I prioritized Day 1000 by turning down a good amount jobs and brand deals, and as a result these past 6 weeks or so have been slower than normal for me. This surgery was a pretty great way for me to take advantage of the down time, but I am absolutely itching to get back to it. I recently booked a gig for mid-September and started getting some brand deal inquiries - both of which are a good sign that I have some momentum and the pendulum should swing back for the rest of the year. I think my patience during this time has paid off and I am fully ready to step back into things. To all my fellow freelancers also going through a slow time, I see you and I know things will pick up soon!
I have had time to think about what I want to put my energy towards - and most signs point towards Hydrant. I personally feel a great sense of purpose in building a solution for freelancers and creators like myself who deserve to have faster payment options. It also gives a great ethos for the vlog, something that each video is working towards. As I’ve mentioned, we are putting a ton of energy into the website and are making great progress. The User Dashboard is almost finalized and will serve as the crown jewel of the site.
There are a lot of exciting Hydrant updates to come. If you are interested in trying out the service, let me know! We are accepting new creators (slowly) and Weekly Bev readers skip to the front of the line :)
😍 Content I’m Loving
As you can imagine, I’ve had plenty of time to watch TV over the past two weeks. Most days, my content of choice was Breaking Bad. I know I’m late to the party, but this was my first time ever watching the show and I have a few thoughts…
me watching the show the past two weeks…
Overall: a pretty flawless show from top to bottom, in my humble opinion. Incredible writing, interesting characters, great conflict, and a super original concept. Each season had new characters, and each of them were great for their own reasons. Walt’s character arc was gripping. The relationship the viewer has with him starts from an empathetic place. He is the underdog and over the course of the first season you really crystallize this idea that you want him to succeed, but over the course of the subsequent seasons and years, through a slow burn achieved by the aforementioned incredible writing, he makes decisions that eventually turn you against him. In the end, in fantastic fashion, his story comes full circle and ends with a perfect close on a beautiful shot.
let Walt cook
Going into the show, I did not expect there to be so much conflict between Jesse and Walt. It certainly makes sense, as they are trying to scale a meth empire, but I kept waiting for the moment when they would lock in on the same page. That tension kept pulling me in as I would go back and forth between agreeing with Walt and agreeing with Jesse.
I am sure most of you have seen it by now but if for some reason you have not, I highly recommend it. I loved every season and honestly can already picture myself rewatching it from time to time. I also just finished El Camino and have been debating on starting Better Call Saul. Let me know by replying to this if you have seen it and if it is worth the watch.
