Good morning! As promised, here is the current Bev Lord Leaderboard 😎

If you want to see your name up here and vie for a chance at a one year supply of Leisure and invites for you and a friend to the 1,000th vlog extravaganza here in Los Angeles, you know what to do… :)

And now, for the 4th Edition…

🫖 Clay Pot Thoughts

The other day I was sending videos of F1 Miami from vlog 580 for a pitch to an agency (fingers crossed). As I was watching some of the clips, I couldn’t help but think to myself, “Wow…the vlog is so much better now.” I just published vlog 909, and my ability to pace, build to a moment, and shoot environment is materially better than it was then. Vlog 580 wasn’t even a year ago! Using my FX30 has made a pretty big difference, especially with diegetic sound. Having audio in the moment allows everything to feel much more present when it needs to be, and then the voiceover pushes things along in contrast to that. The craziest part? I specifically remember thinking to myself while in Miami that the vlog was already pretty much the best it can be.

Vlog 580. So young. So naive.

I think it goes for just about anything - the gym, building a business, any kind of art. Day to day it’s hard to see a difference, month to month its a bit more clear, and year to year it’s obvious. With that said, let’s dive into our first ever block quote in the history of The Weekly Bev (something I get excited about as a ~newsletter operator~).

“The ceramics teacher announced on opening day that he was dividing the class into two groups. All those on the left side of the studio, he said, would be graded solely on the quantity of work they produced, all those on the right solely on its quality. Well, came grading time and a curious fact emerged: the works of highest quality were all produced by the group being graded for quantity. It seems that while the “quantity” group was busily churning out piles of work — and learning from their mistakes — the “quality” group had sat theorizing about perfection, and in the end had little more to show for their efforts than grandiose theories and a pile of dead clay.”

David Bayles & Ted Orland in Art & Fear

I love that excerpt because the vlog is my clay pot! It has taught me that the three most important things in content creation are: iteration, iteration, and iteration (in that order). I often get the question, “How do I make my videos better?” My first instinct is to take a look at their content and offer them some pointers, but the truth is that I should always just give this advice: make more stuff more consistently because you will have no choice but to improve. It is quite unlikely that after shooting 100 three pointers anyone will be ready for the NBA, in the same sense it is unlikely you will be a master storyteller after making 100 videos. As you read this, it’s day 910, and I still feel like I am in the toddler phase of what the storytelling could really look like.

Me, in the toddler phase

As I look to vlog 1000, I hope I’m much better at all of this than I am now. I want to build a deeper connection with you guys, I want to be better at editing, and I want to improve my script writing. We march onward! 🙂

🤑 Creator Job Opportunity

Last week, Stan reached out to me with a very cool opportunity. They’re a start up who’s mission is to empower creators to make a living doing what they love, and they’re currently hiring for a creator to join their team full-time. I asked if I could share it with you incredible people, and they said yes! They’re looking for someone who 1) loves shooting documentaries, 2) loves sharing inspiring stories of others, and 3) has a portfolio to showcase both!

If this sounds interesting to you, send an email with your portfolio of work to [email protected]. Make sure to tell them The Weekly Bev sent you! You’ll skip to the front of the line 😎

P.S. This is something I want to do more of! If you or someone you know is hiring and you think the incredible Weekly Bev community would be interested, shoot me a note!

🥐 Cooking

Legendary Weekly Bev audience member Minjie Yim requested that I whip up one of my famous caesar salads this week, so that’s exactly what we did in vlog 908.

The recipe:

  • Caesar dressing: fresh garlic worked into a paste, olive oil, egg yolk, salt, pepper, lemon juice, Worcestershire

  • Romaine lettuce: crispy, fresh, cold, toss in the dressing

  • Baked chicken breast: salt, lemon pepper, paprika, avocado oil - into the oven at 375 for 20ish minutes (exact timing depends on the weight)

  • Add the chicken to the top of the salad

  • Toast up breadcrumbs and shave fresh parmesan on top

  • What do most people mess up? Aggressively pepper your caesar!

Be like Minji, let me know what you want to see…

Thank you so much for tuning it! It means the world.

Sincerely,

Jack

It’s true.
